JILL'S WRITERS

JILL'S WRITERS

Each year, we select a small group of children, all of whom are very good writers, to be in Jill's group. Jill is a journalist, and she visits once every three weeks to take her group. At the end of the year, the groups visits Jill's newspaper office, as you can see in this photograph. The children are watching a graphic designer.

Here is a thrilling sdtory written by Sieman, one of last year's Jill's Writers. You'll enjoy this very creepy story!

THE CURSE OF WATERFALL PARADISE

Jane couldn't ever remember being so frightened. The water looked dark and restless, almost as if someone had switched on an electric kettle and it had begun to boil. She wished she had listened to her fathers warnings

If she'd known this would happen, she would never have left her father's house and gone down to the beach. Jane could still hear her father's words echoing in her ear non stop, loud and clear. 'Jane, honey, listen carefully, this is very important. Do not ever, ever, go near the sea at night, OK?'

But did she listen? No, she didn't, and now she's really regretting it.

Jane should never have gone down to the lonely beach. At night. All alone. She should never have gone near the sea. But she couldn?t resist it.

CHAPTER TWO

Jane stepped out of the car and studied the marvellous view before her. Jane is 12 and has come to stay with her father and her brother Tom, at Paradise Waterfall. Jane's father and mother got divorced about one year ago. Jane had gone to live with her mother and Tom, who is 15, had gone to live with her father in Waterfall Paradise.

Jane gazed at the crowded beach just below as her father and Tom unloaded her luggage from the boot. The person who named this place is absolutely right, thought Jane. This place IS a paradise. Tom saw Jane looking down at the beach and said 'The weather is always flaming hot here, so lots of people come here after school. But don't worry, it will cool down at night.

CHAPTER THREE

Today was Jane's first day at her new school. She had promised to go to the local school for the weeks she stayed in Waterfall Paradise.

Jane stared at the classroom window throughout the whole maths lesson. One, because it was too hot to concentrate, two maths was not her favourite lesson. But when it was an art lesson, Jane didn't miss a word of it, for art was her favourite hobby. Miss Jasper explained things really clearly and was really very nice.

Jane even met a new friend called Emily. Emily too was very interested in art. Jane told Emily about the competition she had entered back at her own village and they talked about what Jane could draw.

Afterwards, Jane invited Emily to dinner and they talked out their own town. Later on, when Emily had gone home and everyone had gone to their rooms, Jane's father came into her room and said something really strange. He sat down on Jane's bed and said... well, he whispered it really..

'Jane Honey, this is really important. Do not ever, ever, go near the sea at night, okay?'

CHAPTER FOUR

One night, four more nights before Jane leaves, she gazed out at the sea. Jane had still not thought of anything for her picture yet. Suddenly she had an idea. At that time, she completely forgot her father's warning. She quickly grabbed her packet of coloured pencils and her drawing pad and quietly slipped on a pair of jeans and put on a warm jacket. Then she sneaked outside and off down to the beach with no sound at all except for the soft padding of her footsteps.

Jane sat down on the sand. It was surprisingly cold.

CHAPTER FIVE

Jane opened her pad and started to sketch. But all of a sudden, Jane saw something move ahead. Then she heard something, as if someone was blowing bubbles in the water. Jane stood up and walked towards the noise. She looked down at the water. It looked dark and restless. Unexpectedly, she dropped her coloured pencils in the water.

"Oh!" cried Jane, in surprise. Without thinking she jumped into the water to rescue her pencils. It shouldn?t be that deep, Jane thought, after all, I've swum in here every morning. But she was wrong. It was very deep indeed. When she floated back to the surface, all the rest of the water started to bubble. Then a hand from under the water grabbed her leg tight and pulled her down down down. Jane shut her eyes firmly and when she opened her eyes again, she was in a cave. Suddenly a shadow fell over her.....

CHAPTER SIX

"Eeeek!" screeched Jane. The person behind stepped back, startled. Jane turned around sharply and gasped.

"Tom!" cried Jane. "What? how? what?s happening? What are you doing here? Answer me!"

"What are YOU doing here?" asked Tom.

"I was trying to draw the picture for the competition and then I heard something?."

Didn?t father tell you never to go near the sea at nights?" demanded Tom? His eyes were locked on Janes.

"But there were strange noises?" Again her voice trailed off.

"Answer me! Didn?t father tell you never to go near the sea at night? Don't you understand? It's the curse of Waterfall Paradise! A horrifying monster that can take any shape it wants, but after midnight it must change back into its own form, or it will die! And it must be near the sea or it won't survive."

"This is a story, right?"

"No, it isn't, Jane. Every summer, the monster takes one victim, and that person is never seen again. Many of these people who live in Waterfall Paradise are ghosts. Me and Dad are ghosts too."

Suddenly his peachy skin started to fade and he turned ghostly pale. He floated slightly.

"See? we want to rest, and to do that, you will have to kill the monster. You are the chosen victim this summer!"

"Wait, no! This can't be! You can't be dead! You and father just can't!" Jane sobbed.

"Sssh, it's five minutes to midnight" said Tom.

Suddenly, they heard heavy footsteps.....

CHAPTER SEVEN

"Jane, Jane" a voice called. It was Emily.

"Emily, what are you doing here?"

"Get away from him!" shouted Emily. "He's the monster!"

"Jane, there she is.. Emily... the monster who can take any shape!" cried Tom.

"I'm not the monster. I'm her last victim. Believe me Jane!"

Suddenly, a bow and arrow appeared out of nowhere.

"Shoot her, shoot her! Creied Tom. Jane heard a loud shriek and Emily started changing shape. She turned into a hideous monster with nine tentacles and one huge eye.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Jane fired an arrow and missed. She was not much good at sport. The monster, or Emily, was coming nearer and nearer as arrows were fired one after the other. Jane aimed her third arrow at the monster?s eye and bullseye! It hit! With a bright light, and a loud explosion, the monster vanished into thin air.

"Wow, third time lucky!" cried Tom.

"I can't believe I just did that."

"Bye Sis, thanks for your help. To get out, crawl through that tunnel over there!"

Tom pointed to a small tunnel near a corner of the cave.

"Bye"

And that was the last Jane ever heard of her father or her brother.

CHAPTER NINE

Jane crawled out and lay still for a long time. She was back at her mum?s house! Inside her bedroom. She was exhausted. Tom didn?t tell me I had to swim a long way to get out, thought Jane. Her skin was wrinkled and clammy. She looked back. The tunnel had disappeared.

"Wow! never again!" she promised herself.
