WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL

The National Youth Orchestra visit Comber Grove!

Comber Grove was the host school for three days of concerts given by the

National Youth Orchestra Band.

On the first day, all the children in Years Four and Five went into the school hall, where the NYO leader, Kevin, gave the children a special music workshop. In just 45 minutes, the children were trained to give a short rhythmic perfomance using their hands, feet and voices to syncopated rhythms and a whistle. It was great fun for everybody!

Later in the morning, all the children in Key Stage 2, and also the top infants, were given a concert by the players in the NYO. The children who had worked on the percussive piece before break also performed it to everybody.

The children were introduced to the various instrumental families, and each player demonstrated the sounds they could make. The children listened to the violin, the viola, the cello and the double bass. Then they heard  instruments from the brass family, and finally the oboe, the flute, and the clarinet.

The orchestra played some pieces the children knew well, such as the theme from the Harry Potter film series, and When The Saints Come Marching In. They also played an excellent version of the Jungle Book, combining all the tunes and songs into a medley. There were various actions for the children to do, which made it a lot of fun.

This was an especially exciting event for Comber Grove children, as we play a very wide range of instruments. Elsewhere on the website you can see what these are, and you can also look at photos of our annual MUSIC DAY.

During the three days, lots of other local schools were invited to come to the concerts here.
